PPPs in Europe and worldwide

<< Back

Governments and local authorities in Europe and all over the world are taking their cue from the PPP programme inaugurated in the UK in 2000.
In 2000, central governments in many countries set up agencies to promote PPPs, a process now underway in up to 60 countries.
The countries of central and eastern Europe are particularly keen on PPPs, seeing them as a solution to their need for infrastructure investment.
The first sector considered, frequently, is transport, and especially finance roads. Then come rail and urban transport, education, defence, water, healthcare, and prisons.

Why? Because public authorities are increasingly dealing directly with the private sector, and public finance providers are retreating from their traditional role.

  • Greater recourse to private financing,
  • Holistic approach to cost evaluations,
  • Search for euro-compatible organisational mechanism.
