Faro Airport extension is the biggest operation VINCI Airports launched and completed since the acquisition of ANA-Aeroportos de Portugal in September 2013: this extension is another step in VINCI Airports’ strategy of investing to sustain growth in Portuguese airports. The inauguration ceremony has been held on July 17th 2017 and was attended by the Prime Minister, António Costa, the Minister of Planning and Infrastructures, Pedro Marques, the CEO of VINCI Concessions and President of VINCI Airports, Nicolas Notebaert, and the CEO of ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal, Carlos Lacerda.

Inaugurated in 1965, Faro airport was the Portuguese airport that registered the highest growth in 2016, with an increase of 18.5% (7.6 million passengers). From January to June 2017, Portuguese airports recorded a growth of 20% compared to the same period in 2016. Faro in particular witnessed the second highest growth after Lisbon, up 18.5% from the first six months of 2016.

With an investment of 32.8 million euros, the expansion and remodeling works of Faro airport are now complete and are the answer to allow the airport to continue to grow in a sustained way, as it has been verified in recent years. With this expansion, Faro Airport increases the terminal's ability to embark and disembark from 2400 to 3000 people per hour. The terminal was enlarged from 81,200 m² to 93,120 m² - with an increase in operating areas and in the public area -, while the retail area and food court were also expanded and revitalized (that are still in finishing phase).

This modernization now completed is a conclusion of a process, which began with the adjustments of the Air Side of the airport. Also, the changes that have occurred in the security at the airports required the construction of new amenities.

During the inauguration, which took place in the presence of António Costa, the Prime Minister of Portugal, Nicolas Notebaert declared: "It is the best example of our concession model: creating commercial conditions of the best possible traffic growth, while investing in infrastructure to prepare future growth".
