The Athens-Patras motorway recognised by the American Society of Civil Engineers

The American Society of Civil Engineers, a leading professional body, honoured the Athens-Patras motorway as a finalist for its 2019 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement award at its 2019 OPAL Gala. The only European to receive an award in this year’s competition, the Athens-Patras motorway was opened in April 2017 following a construction project faced with a large number of technical challenges, including unstable geology; simultaneous construction of a railway line; and existing highway structures remaining open to traffic during construction. Financially, the VINCI Concessions teams succeeded in completing the major project despite the crisis affecting the country thanks to an ongoing constructive dialogue with the Greek authorities.

Since it was opened to traffic, the Athens-Patras motorway has been attracting a growing number of motorists (up 20 % in 2018), thanks to improved road safety, smooth traffic flow and new customer services such as shops and restaurants at service areas, the country’s first charging stations for electric vehicles, and predictive traffic information. Traffic growth on Greece’s new East-West artery supports the country’s economic growth and increasing tourism.
