In Colombia, VINCI Highways at the initiative of Via Esperanza

January 7, 2020

Via 40 Express, a subsidiary of VINCI Highways (VINCI Concessions), which holds the concession for the Bogotá-Girardot highway in Colombia, has set up the “Via Esperanza” initiative, a stopover point along the motorway for thousands of refugees fleeing the economic and political crisis in Venezuela every month.

VÍA ESPERANZA is a space of humanitarian aid providing support and assistance to over 1.000 immigrants travelling along the Bogotá-Girardot road on foot every month. At VÍA ESPERANZA, walkers can find a place to rest, hydrate and receive key information for their journey and a special place for kids with a baby changing station, a mobile library and a painting zone.

The Red Cross and the International Organization for Migration are joining forces in this effort to provide medical, psychological and legal assistance to the population. In a context of economic and food shortages in Venezuela, VIA 40 EXPRESS also leads permanent campaigns to donate durable goods, hygiene products, clothes, comfortable goods and some books and colors pencils for children.

In line with VINCI Highways’ policy to enhance road safety, the initiative also aims at guaranteeing the safety of all the users of our road corridor (drivers, walkers, pedestrians, among others). Social workers from VÍA 40 provide safety recommendations, some personal care elements, food and/or clothes that were donated by the employees or subcontractors of the Concession and a reflective band so that they can be seen when walking on the road.

VIA 40 EXPRESS’ initiatives to support local communities reflects VINCI Concessions’ commitment to create positive change for the communities where it operates infrastructures.
