Freehold ownership

In May 2019, VINCI Airports finalised the acquisition of a majority stake (50.01%) in London Gatwick Airport. The freehold airport is the United Kingdom’s second largest aviation hub and one of Europe’s top 10.

The full ownership of an airport with such strong performance and international scope represents an ideal fit with VINCI Airports’ long-term strategy. Such opportunities are extremely rare.

Serving 228 destinations in 74 countries, it is the world’s most efficient airport and it set a new world record in 2017 by handling 950 aircraft movements in a single day.

London Gatwick is also a reference in terms of innovation, it is one of the five Center of Excellence for innovation of VINCI Concessions network, and environment, as it is already carbon neutral and one of the most advanced airport in terms of circular economy and waste management.

Opening up new opportunities

Innovation everywhere

The airport is continuously innovating in all areas. Luggage drop-off for passengers, chatbot, parking solutions and aircraft queuing systems – the entire airport is designed to ensure smooth flows and offer passengers as enjoyable an experience as possible.

Challenges met

On its way to the sustainable airport

London Gatwick is the kind of airport that paves the way to sustainability. From supporting local community development, acting responsibly on carbon emissions, or developping circular economy and waste management, the environment transition is already a daily reality with numerous successes and ambitious goals for the coming years.

The airport is already carbon neutral with Level 3+ ‘neutral’ Airport Carbon Accreditation and one of the most advanced airport in terme of circular economy and waste management (70% of waste recycled).

It is also commited to protect biodiversity and has retained in 2021 The Wildlife Trusts’ Biodiversity Benchmark for the 7th year!

Offering comprehensive logistical support

London Gatwick was able to stay open throughout the pandemic as the teams effectively worked together to manage the peaks and troughs in operations without ever compromising on service or safety.

Other logistics resources and space were made available to health authorities, such as the long-stay car park at London Gatwick, which was transformed into a large-scale testing centre in the spring of 2020.

Keep developping the connectivity

As a partner to over 300 airlines throughout the world, VINCI Airports has continued to capitalise on a range of opportunities despite the ongoing pandemic. Successes include the establishment of new bases by Wizz Air at London Gatwick in 2021.  Wizz Air began flying out of London Gatwick in 2016, and has since carried nearly one million passengers. With the creation of a new base at London Gatwick, Wizz Air will offer passengers even more affordable travel options. EasyJet also added four more airplanes to its base, taking its offering at the airport to 107 destinations in 28 countries.
