Rennes Bretagne Airport

Holding:

49% VINCI Airports
51% CCI Ille-et-Vilaine

End of contract (year):

2026

VINCI Airports took over the concession of Rennes Bretagne Airport — in partnership with the Ille-et-Vilaine Chamber of Commerce and Industry — in 2010. In order to support its growth and maximise the comfort of travellers, renovation work was carried out on the terminal in 2014 and a new lounge area was inaugurated the following year.

The airport leverages the appeal of the Rennes region to attract new airline companies and create new flight routes. VINCI Airports and a number of local stakeholders are working to make Rennes Bretagne Airport a key asset to boost the profile of the region both in France and beyond. This collaborative effort has benefited the airport for several years. At the end of 2020, the airport inaugurated its first direct flight outside Europe to Casablanca.

Rennes Bretagne Airport is also a major cargo hub in France.

OPENING UP NEW OPPORTUNITIES

Attracting more passengers

The growth in traffic at the airport has come as a direct result of operating routes throughout Europe. Destinations like Amsterdam, London, Manchester, Barcelona and Casablanca are now just a few hours from Brittany, which has had a decisive impact on passenger at Rennes airport.

Attracting business travellers

In order to attract more business passengers — who often travel via Paris for long‑haul flights — the journey time between Paris and Rennes needed to be reduced. This meant persuading Air France to use faster aircraft.

The VINCI Airports’ marketing teams set up meetings between Air France and key local stakeholders, including the City of Rennes and a number of companies based in the region. The goal was to make the full extent of the region’s potential clear to the national airline. The perfect synergy that came out of these meetings was enough to convince Air France, who decided to use faster aircraft. This decision reduced the flight time by 25 minutes — meaning the journey lasts just 50 minutes instead of 1 hour and 15 minutes — leading to a significant increase in business travellers.

Showcasing the regions of France

VINCI Airports aims to showcase the assets of all the regions in which it operates and encourage new companies to set up near airports, working with the tourism industry as new routes are announced. For the launch of the Rennes‑Barcelona route a few years ago, for example, VINCI Airports, Atout France and the Regional Tourism Committee promoted the Rennes region in Catalonia. At the request of the Regional Council and the Regional Tourism Committee, VINCI Airports is also involved in developing Brittany’s tourism strategy. VINCI Airports maintains ongoing relationships with the stakeholders in all sectors.

Challenge Met

An airport that controls its carbon footprint

At Rennes Bretagne Airport, the teams from VINCI Airports are working to make sure that the infrastructure has as little impact on the environment as possible. In 2022, the airport was awarded Level 3 Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA), demonstrating the airport's efforts to decarbonise its activities and involve its stakeholders in this goal. It had also previously received ISO 14001 certification in 2014.
