Women have contributed to the progress of mobility, whether in aviation, automobiles, or the technologies shaping today’s transportation. Discover the story of three pioneering women who pushed the boundaries of their time, breaking barriers and stereotypes to pave new paths. Today, their boldness and visionary spirit resonate in the journeys of the female talents at VINCI Concessions, who, in turn, are shaping the future of mobility infrastructure.

Bessie Coleman, first African-American female pilot

Bessie Coleman (1892 - 1926) was the first African-American and Native American woman to obtain a pilot’s license. Due to racial segregation in the United States, she traveled to France to learn to fly at the Caudron School of Aviation in Le Crotoy, earning her license in 1921. Upon returning to America, she became a media sensation, performing in air shows and working to encourage other women to pursue careers in aviation.

Her work focused on computer architectures and systems capable of processing complex data, paving the way for technologies used today in numerous fields. By the 1980s, Alice Recoque's research had already anticipated applications that are now indispensable, such as spell checkers, machine translation, and conversational assistants.
