In Cambodia, VINCI Airports and its local subsidiary, Cambodia Airports, have been managing the airports of Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville and Siem Reap for over 25 years. The stakes are high — in 2015, the three airports accounted for 17% of the country’s GDP and employed 20% of the active population.* The important investments realized in the last years in Cambodia (more than $100 million) have enabled to double the overall capacity at Phnom Penh and Siem Reap airports to 10 million passengers.

Phnom Penh airport has undergone significant renovation and expansion work over the last few years, in preparation for the major growth in tourism and international traffic that is expected. The work was intended to strengthen the airport infrastructure to support growth and offer the most state-of-the-art services to passengers. The large-scale project was finalised in 2018 – the new arrival and departure halls were inaugurated in 2017 and the runway renovation and extension was completed in 2018.

In 2019, the airport was awarded by the CAPA Centre of Aviation, best Asia Pacific regional airports for smaller airports category (fewer than 10 million annual passengers).

In 2020, the airport achieved ACA carbon reduction certification level 2. This new level of certification is a recognition of the relevance of the VINCI Airports’ global environmental policy

OPENING UPNEW OPPORTUNITIES

Unlocking growth through air transport

For several years now, Cambodia has been attracting large numbers of tourists, which has had a positive impact on the aviation industry. VINCI Airports has been taking advantage of this growth to develop international traffic by increasing the number of flights to China, establishing the first direct route to Tokyo, and opening new connections with Kuala Lumpur and Dubai.

The renovation and extension work also equipped Phnom Penh airport to accommodate new airline companies such as Emirates. The airport has become a key driver of economic growth in the country and is attracting major international brands. Now bigger and more innovative, it is ready to set up new partnerships.

Maximising comfort at take off and landing

The runway was extended by 3,000 m in order to improve airport operations. The work was carried out at night so that it would not disrupt any flight schedules.

It now has been resurfaced and LED ground lighting has been installed to minimise carbon emissions. The work has improved runway safety and optimised passenger comfort.

Meeting passengers’ expectations

All the airports in our network see it as a priority to make passenger journeys smoother and easier. The departure lounge at Phnom Penh is modular and can be adapted according to the flow of passengers so that travellers are welcomed in the best conditions possible. Meanwhile, the central area of the airport now showcases a number of local and international brands, as well as restaurants, telecommunications services and tourist information points. The entire airport has been designed to be as comfortable as possible.
