Sihanoukville Airport

Holding:

70% VINCI Airports
30% Muhibbah Masteron Cambodia (a Malaysian-Cambodian joint venture)

End of contract (year):

2040

For over 25 years, VINCI Airports has been operating three international airports in Cambodia through its subsidiary Cambodia Airports. After VINCI Airports invested €270 million in the transport infrastructure, the three airports handled a total of 10 million passengers in 2019.

The airports in Sihanoukville, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh have been extended to meet the demand created by ever-increasing numbers of passengers. Sihanoukville, a coastal town that is very popular with international tourists, has grown exponentially since regular flights to the destination were opened in 2011.

On 2020, the airport celebrated finishing the renovation of its runway. The $58 million investment programme initiated in 2018 and carried out by a consortium including VINCI Construction Terrassement and Soletanche Freyssinet means the airport can now handle wide-body and ultra-long haul aircraft like the Boeing 777-300ER and the Airbus A350-1000. A new LED runway lighting system was also installed to improve visibility for pilots and reduce the airport’s energy consumption

Cultivating the art of hospitality

In 2016, the aim was simple – increase passenger numbers to 500,000 per year. In order to be able to manage this flow of people, VINCI Airports launched a project to renovate and extend the terminal building. The work was carried out without any interruption to air traffic.

The departure lounge was expanded from 2,700 m2 to 4,800 m2. The check-in area, departure lounge and baggage reclaim hall were fully modernised and state-of-the-art equipment was installed. VINCI Airports built new food courts and retail areas occupied by local and international brands.

The project optimised the use of space to provide an improved service and a more enjoyable passenger experience.

Opening the airport to even bigger aircraft

To continue to expand, Sihanoukville airport must be able to provide a variety of high quality airport services. This is why it is key to be equipped for even larger aircraft from the most far-flung places.

The airport celebrated finishing the renovation of its runway, extended to a total length of 3.3 km, and can now handle wide-body and ultra-long haul aircraft like the Boeing 777-300ER and the Airbus A350-1000. A new LED runway lighting system was also installed to improve visibility for pilots and reduce the airport’s energy consumption

OPENING UP NEW OPPORTUNITIES

Encouraging airline companies to open new routes

The marketing teams at VINCI Airports are working closely with tour operators and airline companies to promote this emerging seaside destination. This strategy was recognised at the Routes Asia 2019 Marketing Awards.

New international routes to and from China, Malaysia and Vietnam have proved to be extremely popular, almost from the moment they opened. As a result, Sihanouk International Airport is growing rapidly and welcomed over one million passengers in 2019.

Challenge Met

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions

VINCI Airports is the first multinational operator to participate in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme at all of its airports. In March 2018, Sihanoukville airport renewed its ACA certification awarded by the Airports Council International (ACI), demonstrating the airport’s desire to reduce its carbon footprint over the long term.

In 2020, the airport achieved ACA carbon reduction certification level 2. This new level of certification is a recognition of the relevance of the VINCI Airports’ global environmental policy.
