VINCI Airports entered the market in Brazil in 2017 when it signed the concession contract for the airport in Salvador with ANAC (Agence Nacional de Aviação Civil, the National Civil Aviation Agency of Brazil). The contract includes the operation, maintenance and extension of the terminal and the existing airport runways.

It is part of a plan to renovate and extend the airport, designed to serve the country, the state of Bahia, the Salvador region and its inhabitants.

In December 2019, VINCI Airports, in synergy with VINCI Energies, completed a programme to modernise the airport, with a strong environmental dimension. The €160 million investment was completed in 18 months.

The green gem

Salvador Bahia Airport has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by taking part in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme of ACI (Airports Council International). Efforts are quickly rewarded. Just one year after achieving Level 1, Salvador Bahia Airport achieved ACA Level 2 in early 2020, ACA3 in 2022, then ACA 4+ in 2025.

In January 2020, with the construction of a new waste sorting centre, Salvador Bahia Airport became the first zero waste to landfill airport in Brazil - two years ahead of schedule. In 2018, the airport had already achieved zero liquid waste with the inauguration of a wastewater treatment and recycling plant.

In June 2020, the construction of a self-consumption photovoltaic park to supply its terminal was completed, another first in Brazil. This plant, consisting of 11,000 solar panels, reduces the airport's carbon footprint by 30%.

By obtaining the highest scores in sustainability related matters, Salvador Bahia Airport has been awarded for third year in a row as the most sustainable in Brazil. The recognition is granted by National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) annually as part of its Sustainable Airport Program.

In 2022, the airport opened its first Sustainability Complex. The compound brings together the terminal's main environmental initiatives, such as its Effluent Treatment Station (ETE), the Waste Center, and its newest structure: a Biodiversity Center with more than 600 sq. m. space destined to the development of fauna and flora conservation actions.

In early 2023, Salvador Bahia Airport was the first in Brazil to receive ISO 14001 environmental certification .

A source of satisfaction

The concession contract has given the airport a new lease of life. The project to renovate and expand the terminal building will offer passengers greater comfort, with a brand new 20,000sqm departure lounge, a retail area, a nursery, renovated toilets, redesigned signs, improved air conditioning as well as free and unlimited WiFi.

Showcasing local culture and committed do diversity

VINCI Airports demonstrates its commitment to the local community by showcasing its culture. In partnership with the local authorities, Salvador Bahia airport has hosted exhibitions and cultural events ever since the first year VINCI Airports took over operations. This means that tourists find themselves immersed in the culture of Brazil as soon as they set foot in the airport.

The airport also organises numerous diversity initiatives. For the third consecutive year, it has been awarded the "Seal of Diversity" by the Salvador City Council. This award recognises actions to combat racism and promote equity in labour relations.
