End of contract (year):

2040

Toulon occupies a special place in the tourism industry. It is the largest city in the Var, France’s second most popular region for tourism after Paris. Toulon‑Hyères Airport, which has been managed by VINCI Airports since 2015, therefore has a key role to play in developing tourism.

The airport's modernisation works were completed in October 2020 in accordance with the initial schedule. These works are the most important since the airport was built in 1967.

The airport is also continuing to develop the connectivity of the territory, with several announcements of new routes and new partner companies.

Toulon Hyères is the first French airport to achieve net zero emissions in its activity scope and is one of only 10 airports worldwide to have obtained ACA level 5 in recognition of their decarbonisation efforts.

OPENING UPNEW OPPORTUNITIES

Developing the connectivity of the territory

Close work with major airlines has led to the opening of new routes. In early 2021, for example, VINCI Airports announced new routes to London Gatwick and Paris Charles de Gaulles, operated by easyJet, and to Paris-Orly, Nantes-Atlantique and Brest-Bretagne, operated by Transavia.

ChallengeMet

Modernising the airport

Despite the exceptional situation caused by the Covid-19 crisis, the modernisation works at Toulon Hyères civil and military airport were completed in compliance with health regulations and in accordance with the initial schedule. They were carried out by a consortium comprising Eurovia's Toulon office (leader), TP Spada (a Eurovia subsidiary) and Degreane (a VINCI Energies subsidiary).

The operation consisted in renovating the two runways and significantly improving the airport's environmental performance.

These works are the largest since the airport was built in 1967.

Pursuing the environmental transition

Toulon Hyères airport had its environmental management system certified ISO 14001 at the end of 2019.

Among its initiatives, the airport has acquired a thermal brush cutter that avoids the use of phytosanitary products.

Toulon Hyères is also the first in France to test a battery-powered generator to supply electricity to parked aircraft without emitting CO2.

Finally, its filtering inspection station has been equipped with an innovative compactor, which won an award at VivaTech, to facilitate the recycling of plastic bottles.

Between 2018 and 2022, Toulon Hyères airport has reduced its CO2 emissions by more than 90% by replacing its fuel boilers with heat pumps, using electric or biofuel-powered ramp vehicles, subscribing to a guaranteed renewable electricity contract, replacing the lighting in the terminal and aircraft parking area with LEDs and implementing an energy-saving policy (presence detectors, temperature set points, etc.) with the aim of achieving "Zero Net Carbon Emission" for the airport's own activities (scopes 1 and 2).

At the end of 2023, Toulon Hyères airport reached level 5 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation* (ACA) programme of Airports Council International (ACI).

Toulon Hyères airport is now the first commercial airport in France to be certified net zero emissions for its direct operations. It is one of the first ten airports in the world to achieve this level, which certifies the airport has reached balance on its direct emissions.
